What Are the Benefits of Indoor Glass Flooring?
What Are the Benefits of Indoor Glass Flooring? As a glass factory with years of experience in deep processing, we often get asked whether indoor glass flooring is worth choosing. This cannot be simply answered by saying it looks beautiful. Being both a decorative surface and a structural component that people step on, it needs to deliver light transmission, sound insulation and easy maintenance all at once. Before confirming orders, we always clarify the opening size, supporting structure and space underneath, so we can offer accurate quotations and reliable lead times.   First, bring natural light downwards. The most prominent advantage of glass flooring is light transmission. It works perfectly for stairwells, double-height voids and basement light wells. Natural light from the upper level flows straight down. Many homeowners who chose our products shared that their basement or lower floor no longer needs lights on through much of the daytime. Beyond energy savings, ample natural light creates a more pleasant atmosphere. We recommend low-iron clear glass for load-bearing use. It avoids the green tint common to standard glass, presenting true colours of furniture and floors below.     Second, extend visual space. Transparent glass allows sight to pass through. A section of glass flooring at the end of a corridor adds depth. In lofts and studies, it prevents the space from feeling cramped even with limited ceiling height. Many clients feel their home visually expands after installation. Still, privacy is compromised, so it is not suitable above bedrooms or bathrooms. Paired with LED strip lights along edges, it creates a stunning night-time effect. We suggest adding frosted warning strips along edges to remind visitors of the transparent surface.   Third, safety relies on laminated glass. Many customers only focus on thickness, yet structural design matters more. Load-bearing floor glass is normally made of toughened laminated panels with PVB or SGP interlayers. When impacted, fragments stick firmly to the interlayer instead of scattering, preventing falls. This is the core safety feature of laminated glass for flooring. SGP interlayers suit large spans and areas with heavy loads thanks to higher rigidity and better resistance to delamination, while PVB serves well for light-traffic walkways at lower cost. Common combinations include 12+12 mm and 10+10+10 mm. For spans over 1.5 metres without intermediate supports, professional structural load data is mandatory.   We also recommend heat soak treatment to reduce spontaneous breakage risk of tempered glass. Though slightly more costly, it eliminates hidden risks in advance. Custom load test samples can also be produced for verification.   Fourth, anti-slip, sound insulation and finishing details. Plain polished glass turns slippery when wet. Frosted, textured or anti-slip film options are available, with extra strips recommended for households with the elderly or children. The interlayer of laminated glass effectively blocks mid-to-high frequency noise, delivering quieter walking experience than single panels. Careful edge finishing is essential: all edges shall be chamfered, and expansion gaps reserved to avoid cracking from thermal expansion. Neutral silicone sealant prevents moisture ingress, which would cause permanent fogging inside the laminate.   Fifth, popular installation solutions. Frame-supported systems divide large openings into smaller panels with steel frames, offering stable performance and controlled cost, yet with more visible frames. Point-fixed systems use metal clamps to hold large glass sheets for minimal visual interruption, requiring precise machining. Full-span panels resting on perimeter beams achieve the cleanest look, but demand stricter structural reinforcement and careful lifting. Our team will provide sketches to help clients pick the solution matching their site, budget and aesthetic preference.   Sixth, what a professional glass factory provides. Glass flooring is far more than simple cutting. All processes including hole drilling, edge polishing, special shaping, silk-screen printing and coating are completed in our workshop. Minor dimensional errors can lead to failed installation. We require accurate site drawings and supporting details before production to confirm processing drawings. Large panels are packed vertically in custom wooden crates to avoid chipping. We also offer guidance for lifting, sealing and gap treatment on site. Standard lead time for custom laminated glass is 7 to 12 working days, longer for low-iron glass, heat soak treatment or silk-screen requirements. Samples can be made for reference, and full production records are kept for after-sales support. Seventh, cost and daily maintenance. Glass flooring costs more than tiles or timber floors, mainly due to toughened lamination, low-iron raw material and custom processing. Unit price drops for larger orders. Maintenance is convenient: it resists water, mould and warping, with no squeaking. The downside is footprints and dust are easily visible on light-toned surfaces. Most people quickly get used to the feeling of standing above void space.   Eighth, scenarios we do not recommend. Avoid glass flooring if ceiling height is limited, the underlying structure cannot bear the load, or the budget is too tight. It is not ideal above private rooms such as bedrooms and washrooms. Renovation projects must first verify structural reinforcement before opening floors. Direct installation on the ground floor should be avoided unless reliable moisture barriers are built, as trapped humidity will fog the laminate.   When site conditions allow, glass flooring delivers unmatched daylight and spatial experience. Proper design, qualified laminated glass and standard installation ensure decades of reliable use. Cutting corners on processing usually leads to expensive reworks later.

Since the interlayer film in laminated glass seems soft, how on earth can it stop a high-speed bullet?
Since the interlayer film in laminated glass seems soft, how on earth can it stop a high-speed bullet? Layer Structure of Bulletproof Glass Bulletproof glass is essentially a special type of laminated glass. There is no fixed number of layers (commonly ranging from three to multiple layers), but functionally it can be divided into three core layers: Load-bearing layer (strike face): Usually made of thick, high-strength glass (such as chemically tempered glass or high-alumina glass). Its role is to withstand the impact first, consume the bullet's kinetic energy through fracturing, and attempt to deform or blunt the bullet, reducing its penetrating power. Transition layer (intermediate layer): Generally uses organic adhesive materials (such as PVB, PU, SGP film, or polycarbonate sheets). This layer has strong adhesion and is responsible for absorbing most of the bullet's remaining impact energy, altering the bullet's direction of travel, and preventing it from penetrating further. Safety protection layer (back face): Mostly uses high-strength glass or high-toughness transparent organic materials (such as polycarbonate PC sheets). It uses its own elasticity and toughness to absorb the final impact energy, ensuring the bullet cannot penetrate, while also bonding flying fragments to prevent secondary injury. Why Laminated Glass Can Stop Bullets The reason laminated glass can stop bullets lies in the physical properties of the interlayer film (such as PVB film) and the synergistic effect of the multi-layer structure: Bonding and containment: The interlayer film has extremely strong adhesion. When the glass shatters upon impact, the fragments are firmly bonded to the film and will not fly around, maintaining the integrity of the entire glass panel and preventing penetration and fragment injuries. Kinetic energy absorption: High-quality film (such as SGP or thick PVB) has high tear strength and toughness. When a bullet hits, the film layer absorbs the bullet's kinetic energy through its own stretching and deformation, acting as a buffer and preventing the bullet from advancing further. Multi-layer retardation: Bulletproofing is not achieved by a single film alone. When the bullet penetrates the outer hard glass, its energy is already consumed and it becomes deformed; upon entering the film layer, it is adhered to and retarded; finally, it is stopped by the inner high-toughness material. This "hard-soft-tough" combination achieves the bulletproof effect.

1. Was genau ist Glaskunst? Viertens, hoher Grad an Anpassung.
